10 things to know about Mia Mottley

Mia Mottley will become the first female Prime Minister of Barbados after the party she heads, the Barbados Labour Party swept the former administration aside in a historic 30-0 win in Thursday’s General Election.

No stranger to Barbados’ political landscape, Mottley has the confidence and hope of an entire nation on her shoulders as she seeks to pull the island out of the economic morass it is currently in.

As she gets to work appointing her new Cabinet, let’s get to know the incoming PM who has spent her entire adult life in politics.

Who is Mia Mottley?

1) Mia was born on October 1, 1965

2) Mia Amor Mottley is the granddaughter of Ernest Deighton Mottley, a real estate broker and the first Mayor of Bridgetown

3) Mia’s father, Elliott Deighton Mottley, was also a barrister who sat in the House of Assembly. He served as consul-general in New York and as Bermuda's attorney-general. He also sat on Belize's Court of Appeal

4) Mia entered politics in 1991 at the age of 26

5) In 1994, following the BLP’s victory in the general election, Mia was appointed to the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Culture and at the age of 29, she became one of the youngest Barbadians ever to be assigned a ministerial portfolio.

6) She was elected General Secretary of the Barbados Labour Party in 1996

7) Mia was appointed Attorney-General and Minister of Home Affairs in August 2001 and is the first female in Barbados to hold this position. 

8) In 2002, Mia served as Barbados's second female Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Social Council of Barbados and the Deputy Chairman of Barbados' Economic Council, a position she held until 2008

9) She assumed leadership of the BLP in 2008 becoming the first female to lead the party and the Opposition but her position was revoked in 2010 in favour of former PM Owen Arthur

10) She reportedly told a secondary school teacher that she will one day become the island’s first female Prime Minister.
