Remand for murder accused in Rihanna's cousin's case
Days after the Boxing Day killing of Rihanna's cousin, Tavon Kaiseen Alleyne, a neatly clad young man appeared before the courts charged with his murder.
Flanked by officers that led him across the District 'A' Magistrates' Courtroom, Shawayne Dashawn Williams, 23 years of White Hall #1, St. Michael stood in the dock around noon today. Magistrate Douglas Frederick read the details of the capital offence.
Williams was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was remanded until January 31. He towered over the officer that led him to the area where the prison bus waited.
He was represented by Attorney-at-law Andrew Pilgrim and associates.
The shooting death of the 21-year-old of Lakes Close, Eden Lodge, St. Michael garnered emotional response from his cousin Grammy-Award winning Barbadian singer Rihanna and other family members online. They expressed great sadness at the violent killing of the young man.
Rihanna spent Christmas Day with Alleyne and recalled the moment as she paid tribute to him on Instagram.
The post read: "RIP cousin... can't believe it was just last night that I held you in my arms! never thought that would be the last time I felt the warmth in your body!!! Love you always man!"
It was accompanied by a picture of the two in a playful embrace.
The singer ended the post with #endgunviolence, a clear call for the end of gun crimes which have rocked the nation in the past months. They were 23 gun-related murders last year.
