5 Things you may not know about DLP’s President, Verla Depeiza

Newly elected President of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP), Verla Depeiza will have her name recorded on history’s page for being the first female to ever head the 63-year-old political party.  

Depeiza is no stranger to the political life and has been rendering her services to the DLP since her teenaged years.

Here are 5 things you may not know about her: 

1. She is a Barbados Exhibition awardee. In 1991 Depeiza was awarded an Exhibition while a student at Harrison College.  


2. She is a trained criminologist. Depeiza completed her tertiary education at the University of Southampton where she gained a Bachelor of Science degree in Politics and Law with Upper Second Class honours. She then went onto study at Queen Mary College of the University of London where she achieved a Merit in the Master of Laws degree specialising in Criminology and Criminal Justice. 


3. She is a former President of the Young Democrats. Depeiza is also past Assistant General Secretary of the Democratic Labour Party and has been a consistent representative on both the Executive and General Councils of the Party. 


4. She is a mother of two and also an active member of the Seven Days Adventist Church.  


5. She grew up in Clapham  in the constituency of Christ Church West, where she unsuccessfully contested that seat in the May 24 General Elections.
