Barbados ranks #8 for COVID-19 testing rates in the region

Barbados has one of the highest testing rates for the COVID-19 virus in the Caribbean.

According to data released from the Worldometer, Barbados has the eighth-highest testing rate per capita with 0.52 percent of the population having been tested for the viral illness.

Bermuda has been ranked at number one in the region with a testing rate of 1.88 per cent.

The Best dos-Santos Public Health Laboratory in Barbados has now completed 1,751 tests since testing began on February 11, 2020. 

The Minister of Health and Wellness, Jeffrey Bostic in a recent press conference said efforts are on to increase testing as a measure to ensure that there is no community spread of the virus. 

The issue of dwindling testing resources hindered efforts of health authorities to carry out testing. Government was able to source over 25,000 testing kits and 2,800 swabs within the last week to assist with mass testing.

Locally there are 80 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 39 people recovered and 35 people remain in isolation as of April 27. 

The Caribbean has recorded 10,918 cases of the virus while there are 3,055, 651 confirmed cases of the coronavirus globally with 211,065 deaths recorded and 919,366 cases recovered.
