Barbados defeat Bermuda 3-2
After 13 years and four consecutive defeats, the Barbados Men’s senior football team finally defeated Bermuda.
Playing Saturday night at the National Sports Center in Hamilton, Bermuda, the Tridents displayed dedication, passion and nationalism to erase a two-goal deficit and win 3-2.
It was disastrous opening 20 minutes for the visitors, as they failed to connect passes and beat the high press of Bermuda who were filled with energy from their boisterous support group.
Willie Clemons handed Bermuda the lead in the 8th minute with a header from close range, while Jaylan Bather doubled the score in the 20th minute.
Barbados returned after the interval rejuvenated, looking like a team with purpose.
Claytons Kola Tonic Notre Dame forward Zeco Edmee brought the score back within one goal when his left-footed effort from outside the area beat the outstretched right arm of goalkeeper Quinacoe Hunt.
The momentum switched in Barbados’ favour after Edmee’s goal but the game switched totally when 16-year-old St Leonard’s Boys’ School student Dishon Howell was introduced for captain Mario Harte.
Howell showed no signs of nerves or fright and justified his selection when he capitalized on a mistake from Hunt to score his senior debut international goal into an empty net in the 88thminute.
Before the hosts could settle and reorganise Howell silenced the stadium with Barbados’ third goal; receiving a pass inside the area, dribbling by two defenders and calmly slotting into the bottom right-hand corner to score his second of the night.
