The hope of the Coordinator of Accommodation and Hospitality for UNCTAD 15 in Barbados is that the rooms of the former Elegant Hotels, now acquired by Marriott International, will be available for guests in October.

Admitting that that room stock was included when the bid was made for Barbados to host the 15th UNCTAD quadrennial conference back in June 2019, in late December Cecily Walcott told ministry officials, hoteliers and the media that they may have to engage the new owners Marriott International about their plans for the seven hotels.

As of December 9, 2019, Elegant became a wholly owned subsidy of International Hotel Licensing Company which is a wholly-owned indirect subsidiary of Marriott International Inc.

Therefore, the Coordinator of Accommodation and Hospitality for UNCTAD 15 Cecily Walcott said that Marriott International will be asked to ensure that the rooms of the recently purchased Elegant Hotels remain available for October 2020.

She said, "We're engaging the new management to see what is possible because we really cannot lose those rooms if we are to accommodate the number of delegates that we are anticipating and we also hope that any refurbishment they're planning for those properties will be either put back until to after the Conference or certainly be completed before October."

The Conference is set to run from October 18 to October 23, 2020.

This is but one additional event which will see an influx of persons travelling to Barbados throughout this year 2020 as Barbadians abroad are called home for the We Gatherin' festivities and celebrations.
