One 2017 Barbados Scholarship winner is holding her breath until Monday, February 26, 2018.
Today the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation issued a press release stating that the tuition fees for Hailey Laurayne, who was one of the scholarship winners from Queen’s College, last year, have been paid.
The statement read:
“Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, June Chandler, has confirmed that tuition fees for Barbados Scholar, Hailey Laurayne, have been paid.
“She said investigations conducted by the Ministry into the circumstances surrounding non-payment of fees on behalf of Ms. Laurayne have revealed that the University of Southampton, where Ms. Laurayne is currently a student, has received payment.
“Ms. Chandler said the Ministry regretted the unfortunate circumstances that led to the late payment.”
Loop News chatted with Hailey after receiving the ministerial notice, and she said that “Up to Friday my university had not received a payment for my tuition fees from the government and had notified me for the second time regarding this. However I will be checking first thing on Monday to see if the payment has been received.”
Today's announcement from the Ministry of Education came after Hailey's plight was highlighted in another section of the media under the headline 'Scholarship winner says fees not paid'.
Studying Undergrad Medicine in the United Kingdom, Hailey said despite the hiccups due to late payments, “I’m really enjoying it thus far.”
Asked how she feels now, having learnt the news issued by the Ministry of Education, along with the apology, Hailey repeated, “I will be very relieved on receiving the confirmation.”
