Primary school teacher Terry Carrington received a pleasant surprise when he learned that he had been chosen as the best common entrance teacher in Barbados for 2018.

Honoured by regional insurance company, Sagicor Life Inc., Terry was nominated by parents on Facebook who were asked to nominate an outstanding teacher who had led students through the recently completed Common Entrance Examination.

The number of nominations submitted for the St. Stephen’s Primary School teacher and the reasons parents gave for their nominations convinced the company that they had a clear winner.

Carrington made the decision to remain at St. Stephen’s after teaching the students in Class 3. In preparation for the Examination, he created workbooks, coordinated vacation lessons and lunch time study groups and created a chat group to communicate with parents.

A team from Sagicor Life Inc visited the school last Friday to present a cheque for $500 to be used for a party for the 36 Class 4-1 students, along with an award and a gift certificate, from the Barbados Hilton, for Carrington.

And the superstar teacher was humble about the kind gesture from Sagicor, saying: “I have to give thanks to God first, for my abilities and I also sincerely thank the parents for nominating me. It was truly a pleasure working with this group of parents. It is not only the school that is involved in a child’s education, so it was important to have such a dedicated and supportive group of parents.”

Carrington also thanked Sagicor for the award and gift, adding: “I really appreciate that Sagicor thought about us teachers, there is so much that we do every day for our students and it is nice to be recognised.”

“The remarks parents made about Carrington really touched us here at Sagicor Life Inc.” explained Carolyn Shepherd, Assistant Vice-President of Marketing.

“Mr. Carrington has guided his students and went above and beyond to ensure they had a firm grasp of the curriculum and were prepared for the examination. We commend his dedication and we want to ensure that he knows how much his students and their parents appreciate him.”
