Condomed drugs and counterfeit money gets Jamaican arrested

The Royal Barbados Police Force is reporting another drug seizure at this island's airport.

Members of the Drug Squad have arrested and formally charged a Jamaican national for a number of drug-related offences which were committed at the Grantley Adams International Airport on Sunday, January 21.

She is 35-year-old, Alicia Tamara Beckford.

Beckford was arrested and charged with:

   *Possession of Cannabis

   *Possession with intent to supply

   *Trafficking

   *Importation

   *Possession of Counterfeit Currency

Beckford arrived on the island by air on Sunday, January 21, from Jamaica via Trinidad. Having cleared immigration, she was interviewed by police. A subsequent search revealed that she had a condom filled with cannabis concealed in her vagina. A further search revealed that she was also in possession of counterfeit currency. She was subsequently referred to the QEH, where she later passed out 39 packages each containing cannabis.

She was subsequently arrested and charged. She appeared before Magistrate Laurie-Ann Smith-Bovell yesterday, where she pleaded guilty to the drug-related offences.

She was fined $8000 forthwith for the offence of Importation of Cannabis and was Convicted Reprimanded and Discharged (CRD) for the other offences.

She was not required to plea to the offence of Possession of Counterfeit Currency.

The weight of the suspected cannabis is one kilogram with an estimated street value of eight thousand dollars ($ 8,000) Barbados currency.
