Coronavirus: Frenchmen party promoters cancel carnival events
The promoters of the popular Frenchmen series of parties have announced the cancellation of all their events during the upcoming carnival season due to concerns over the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), the first case of which was confirmed in Jamaica on Tuesday.
"After lengthy consideration the Frenchmen would like to advise that they will be cancelling all lymes, Easter Weekend and carnival events for 2020, in response to evidence that the coronavirus has now been confirmed in Jamaica," the promoters said in a news release Wednesday.
"As responsible party promoters for over 25 years, the Frenchmen continue to put the interests of patrons, sponsors, service providers at the public at the forefront. We appreciate and will continue to support the efforts of our Government, and our fellow Jamaicans, to protect the health and safety of our country," the release added.
The promoters, who noted that eight parties would be affected, advised patrons who had already purchased tickets that full refunds will be facilitated immediately.
"If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email us at firstname.lastname@example.org or call us at 876-928-5542," said the release.
Health and Wellness Minister Dr Christopher Tufton announced Tuesday that a Jamaican woman who also holds UK citizenship had tested positive for COVID-19 days after she arrived in the island to attend a funeral.
She is now being treated in hospital and contact tracing is now taking place to determine how many people the woman may have come in contact with.
Tufton also stated that public gatherings are being discouraged at this time, as well as non-essential travel. Frenchmen is among a number of popular parties during the carnival period, which attracts thousands of visitors from abroad.
Many of the thousands of revellers who are expected in the island around carnival activities travel from overseas and many countries are now battling their own coronavirus outbreaks.
However, despite the confirmed case of COVID-19 in Jamaica, carnival organisers have expressed optimism that the events will go ahead as planned.
