COVID-19: Look out for two new symptoms

New information as it relates to identifying COVID-19 patients locally has arisen.

Barbados is subscribing to international standards and following the research as it comes to light in this most fluid situation, but applying local evidence as well.

Chief Medical Officer, Dr Anton Best, today announced that the newly recognized symptoms of COVID-19 are:

  1. The loss of taste and/or
  2. The loss of smell.

Dr Best indicated the decision to add these two symptoms is based on emerging evidence internationally, as well as local experience. Therefore, the Ministry of Health and Wellness has advised that the public be aware of and pay attention to these two additional symptoms of COVID-19.

The common symptoms previously identified are:

  1. Fever,
  2. Sore throat,
  3. Difficulty breathing and
  4. Cough.

Barbados has been using contact tracing to track persons who may have interacted with the 66 COVID-positive patients, 52 of whom remain in isolation.
