Digicel partners with ZTE to further extend LTE reach

Digicel customers are in for the best surprise, across the length and breadth of the island of Barbados.

Customers of Barbados’ first and fastest Long-Term Evolution (LTE) network, Digicel, will be happy to know that the total entertainment and communications provider is moving swiftly towards covering other parts of the country.

Today, Digicel announced the advancement of its partnership with Chinese technology firm, ZTE, to accelerate the installation of new LTE equipment to deliver superfast internet service to customers’ smartphones, tablets and other devices.

“We’re making another important step in the delivery of a world-class network that will keep Barbadians connected at speeds they never imagined,” shared Alex Tasker, CEO of Digicel Barbados.

In October 2016, Digicel reached a significant milestone by becoming the first telecoms provider to introduce LTE to Barbados. Now, moving towards the deployment of an expanded national network, Digicel foresees the expansion opening up tremendous possibilities for Barbadians, especially those in rural areas, as a key pillar of its Digicel 2030 transformation.

“Making sure everyone has availability of reliable internet service in the places they choose, to live, work and play, is very important to us, as it opens up tremendous education and business opportunities for all,” said Tasker.

LTE, or Long Term Evolution, is the latest in mobile technology, capable of delivering more mobile data at the fastest speeds to connect the growing range of Internet-enabled devices, while running faster than some fixed broadband connections. This means less buffering while watching videos in high definition and glitch-free live streaming on the go.

Earlier this year, the company announced a range of simplified mobile data plans, levelling access to LTE service at no additional cost to subscribers.
