Early onset dementia: Know the signs

As a matter of urgency, the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs intends to start discussions on how to address the increasing number of Barbadians suffering with dementia.

An estimated 4,000 people on the island suffer from the debilitating diseases and the numbers being diagnosed are on the increase.

There is also the concern about the age at which some people are presenting with dementia symptoms- some in their early 40’s.

Here are some signs of early onset dementia:

-Memory loss

-Difficulty planning or solving problems

-Difficulty with familiar tasks

-Confusion about time or place

-Difficulty understanding visual information

-Problems with speaking or writing

-Forgetting where everyday items are

-Poor decision-making

-Withdrawal from socializing

-Personality or mood changes

If you recognize a relative or friend may be suffering with any of the above symptoms, consult a medical professional.
