Equip young people for the world of work

If Barbados is to have a productive workforce, it is critical that young people are schooled about the culture of work and the expectations and demands of the workplace.

It is with this in mind that the World of Work Showcase is held in Barbados so that the students can have first-hand information as to what it is like to enter the “work world” and what they need to do and habits they need to cultivate to succeed.

Dennis de Peiza, Managing Director of Regional Management Services Incorporated, who is the event coordinator of this year's event on Wednesday lamented the need for more to be done to equip these students with all tools to ensure that they are ready for work when they leave school.

Addressing a packed audience at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, he made the call for principals and guidance counsellors in the public and private secondary schools to take a careful look at what the programme offers, and to move to embrace it, so that it complements the work that has already begun.

He applauded the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Human Resources Development for recognizing the value that the programme lends to the national effort in ensuring that the country has a well-trained workforce now and in the future.

“It is our hope that sooner rather than later, the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Human Resources Development will be joined by the Ministry of Education, Science, Innovation and technology and the Ministry of Culture Sports and Youth in giving to this event,” he said.

In her address, Dr. Esther Byer-Suckoo, Minister of Labour, Social Security and Human Resource Development, lauded Regional Management Services, as well as other partners for continuing to place emphasis on the initiative.

She said her ministry is pleased to be part of this showcase for young persons at the secondary and tertiary levels, and she implored them to see the event as one that open doors for them as they eye “the world of work”.

The inaugural World of Work Showcase took place on Monday, June 20, 2016.
