Fire claims the life of elderly mother at Newbury, St George home

Tragedy struck in St George when a fire engulfed one wooden home around 2.20 am today.

The family of Inez Mabel Fields is mourning her passing. 

Police reported that this morning, Saturday, January 18, 2020, members of the Force from the Boarded Hall Police Station responded to Newbury, St George after receiving a call that a house was on fire.

The police patrol unit arrived at the scene about 2.30 am and found the house fully engulfed in flames. Two fire tenders were dispatched, one from Bridgetown and another from St John. Eight fire officers under the command of Divisional Officer Wayne Vaughn responded and extinguished the blaze.

The house was a wooden structure with two bedrooms and one bathroom. The house had electricity but the victim was reportedly in the habit of using kerosene oil lamp. Her body was discovered in the doorway to one of the bedrooms.

The deceased was identified by her only son who was at the scene. He granted permission for the identity to be released.
