Fire destroys distillery with 60,000 litres of rum at Long Pond Estate

A section of the Long Pond Sugar Factory in Trelawny was destroyed by fire, resulting in the loss of over 60,000 litres of rum that was in storage at the distillery on Monday afternoon.

Reports are that about 12:30 p.m., the fire brigade responded to a cane fire at the sugar factory, which spread quickly to the distillery.

Firefighters from Trelawny, with help from their colleagues in St Ann and St James, battled the blaze, but were not able to save the distillery. They were, however, able to prevent the fire from spreading further.

The firefighters could not provide an estimate of the loss that was suffered at the factory.

No one was hurt in the blaze.
