Fire destroys two St. Michael homes

A fire of unknown origin occurred about midday on Saturday, at Ceres Land, Grazettes, St Michael and has left eight people homeless.

The fire completely destroyed one wooden house owned and occupied by David Hinds, 57; one wood and wall house owned by Sophia Jaimangal, 52, and Nicole Callender, 35.

It was occupied by both Jaimangal and Callender, along with Jason Brathwaite, 30, Kristen Francis, 24, Kristophe Francis, 21, Trisha Cumberbatch, six, and  one-year-old Javid Francis- Brathwaite.

The fire also damaged the trimming of the roof and the water heater of a wall house owned by Gloria Nowell. The value of the damaged properties has not been assessed.

House owner, Sophia Jaimangal came home about 12 midday and was about to rest when she was awoken by the smell of smoke. She went to her bathroom window and was thrown back by the heat coming from the house of David Hinds which was ablaze.

The one bedroom house has only a kitchen and he lived there alone. He was not home at the time of the fire.

Sophia Jaimangal had to escape from her house as the fire quickly spread to her home and she was unable to save the property but managed to remove some articles of clothing.

Her house is a wood and wall constructed house which consists of three bathrooms, kitchen, living room and four bedrooms. There is another section which is owned by Nicole Callender under the same roof but divided by a door.

None of the homes were insured.

Divisional officer Gittens, Station Officers Vaughn and Hinds along with 12 officers, three fire tenders and a water tanker responded to the blaze.

Investigations into this matter are continuing. Anyone who can provide information to assist with these investigations is asked to contact the Black Rock Police Station at telephone 417-7500.

All information received will be strictly confidential.
