A water tanker from the Barbados Fire Service is being dispatched to support two water tenders already on the scene of a fire at the Garfield Sobers Gymnasium.
The two tenders, one from Worthing Fire Station and the other from Bridgetown Fire Station, responded to the call which was received around 12:10 p.m.
Fire Officer Glyne Alleyne told Loop News said it was unclear exactly what the fire entails at this stage but “there was a pile of debris from the repairs involved and that debris was piled against the building. That’s all I can tell you at this time.”
The gymnasium was closed for renovations in March 2016.
The $19 million project is being undertaken by China State Construction Engineering Corporation (SCEC) and was expected to be completed in 15 months.
