A good slice of banana bread can no doubt leave you wanting more, but did you know that there is much more goodness to this delicacy than its taste?

Not like you needed to know to grab a slice, or two, or three of the moist, mouth-watering delight, but these five facts mean you can feel less guilty about eating way more than you should. 


For the coconut lovers

For those of you who need that coconut in your banana bread, you are getting your fibre on!

While the byproducts of this fruit have been at the centre of controversy for decades, there is no doubt that the yummy stuff inside is filled with goodness.

You can have too much of a good thing though, as the drupe is high in saturated fat and can therefore increase your cholesterol.


A nutty life

So people get all fancy with this banana bread business.

So who doesn't know about the benefits of nuts? They are talked about as a healthy snack every day!

All the protein, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals - and yes, the list goes on.

There is nothing nutty about some good pecans or whichever nut of you love to make that banana bread even healthier - while adding a crunchy delight.

So many persons turn to whole grains instead of white flour when making this delicacy, which makes it even better. 

This means that instead of just simple carbs which don't add much of any nutritional benefit, you are getting the vitamins, minerals and fibre which your body needs to work well.

Hints of cinnamon, nutmeg and other spices help to make this bread the temptation it is.

But that's not all they do.

Cinnamon is well known to lower blood sugar levels, help to reduce heart disease and can even help impact your appetite to prevent weight gain, while nutmeg is full of antioxidants, is good for soothing indigestion and even helps to boost your immune system.

So you are not just taking care of your taste buds, you are taking care of you.

Okay yes. We've gone a little banana crazy - yes just a little.

But how can you not get excited about the namesake of this wonderful dish!

So let's not even reflect on the taste and just focus on the superpowers. Lowering blood pressure, being a vitamin and mineral haven, helping with digestion, being fibre-licious....okay, the excitement is back.

But you get what I'm saying right? 

Banana is good, good, gooooood stuff - and so is banana bread!
