Goals galore as David Thompson Memorial Constituency Classic continues
The 2017 edition of David Thompson Memorial Constituency Classic football tournament is in full swing.
After kicking off last weekend at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex, 14 matches were played between Monday and Saturday.
Highlighting the series of matches during the past week was the clash between defending champions St George South and 2015 runners-up St. Michael Central at Orange Hill on Friday evening.
A 3rd-minute strike by Zinho Harris was all that was needed to hand the reigning champions their first defeat of the competition, following their stellar start last Sunday when they defeated St. Michael East 5-0.
In the feature match of the evening at the same ground, host St James North played to a 0-0 tie with St Michael North.
That result placed St Michael North on four points in Group A after their 2-0 victory on Monday versus St. Joseph at the Grantley Adams Memorial School.
Goals by national beach soccer players Jamar Grazette in the 31st minute and Andre Pinder in the 82ndminute got St. Michael North representatives off to a positive start.
Earlier in the evening, in the opening encounter at the St Joseph venue, St. George North’s remained winless in the competition since its inception, as they went down to St Philip North 1-0, courtesy of a from Daniel Rowe in the 43rd minute.
Tournament favourites and two-time champions, Christ Church East Central produced a resilient performance to defeat home boys St.James South 2-0, last Wednesday at the Haynesville playing field.
In a match that was dominated by the host, Christ Church East Central benefited from two set pieces to claim their first win in this year’s competition.
Rico Baptiste opened the scoring in the 61st minute with a well-taken free-kick and in injury time Jabarry “Papi” matched Baptiste’s free-kick with an equally impressive one to double the 2015 champion’s lead.
St Lucy and The City played to a 1-1 draw earlier in the evening.
Nathan Broomes in the 22nd minute gave St Lucy the lead but towering center back Zico Phillips leveled for The City in the 36th minute.
