HR practitioners urged to give full disclosure during retrenchment

The process of retrenchment is always a difficult one within any organization and HR practitioners are being urged to make the transition as seamless as possible.

This advice is coming from President of the Human Resources Management Association of Barbados (HRMAB), Brittany Brathwaite ahead of the association’s upcoming People Leadership Conference.

“Being retrenched can be a life altering event. HR practitioners should aim to alleviate unnecessary stressors by the providing adequate information,” Brathwaite outlined in an interview with Loop News.

She said HR managers must be “thorough in the exit practice” by providing comprehensive information on the exit package as well as providing guidance on if persons are eligible for unemployment benefits, pension or severance pay.

Brathwaite acknowledged that some organizations may have acting HR practitioners who are not trained for such positions. She noted this can pose a challenge as HR roles require knowledge of Labour legislation and HR practices.

She said it was therefore important for organizations that are going through retrenchment to hire a consultant who can provide the relevant guidance.

The People Leadership Conference, slated for October 2 to 4 at Sandals Royal, will focus on issues of industrial relations, workforce management strategies as well as public sector transformation.

Conference Chairman Shane Howell said this year’s committee has focused on creating content that will appeal to a cross-section of participants including business owners, senior executives, HR professionals at varying levels of seniority, supervisory and managerial personnel and students who are considering human resource management as a career path.
