An outspoken South African poet says Jamaica's Davina Bennett deserved to win the Miss Universe crown over her countrywoman, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters.

Ntsiki Mazwai, who is also a social activist, made the declaration via Twitter following Nel-Peters’ first-place finish in the international beauty pageant.

Bennett, the crowd favourite who wore an Afro, finished third.

“I hate taking something I know belongs to someone else....the Miss Universe title belongs to Jamaica,” Mazwai tweeted.

"You don't have to agree with my opinion for me...Miss Jamaica should have been the winner. No doubt in my mind," she said.

The outspoken poet said she had “outgrown” Eurocentric beauty standards and argued that “We are raising another generation of black girls who must aspire to whiteness.”

Bennett, the 21-year-old from the central Jamaica parish of Clarendon, placed second runner-up among 92 contestants from across the globe.

Aside from her Afro, she dazzled in her yellow evening gown and was also solid in the question and answer segment.

In response to a fan-submitted question asking why it's important for men and women to work together to address the issue of sexual misconduct, Bennett said both sexes should come together to make sure no form of abuse, including sexual harassment, is tolerated.

"Sexual harassment is a form of abuse, and no abuse should be tolerated whether in the workplace or in society," Bennett said, attracting cheers of approval from audience members at The AXIS theatre at Planet Hollywood casino-resort on the Las Vegas Strip.

Meanwhile, Mazwai was not alone in her belief that the Miss Universe crown belonged to the Jamaican beauty.

There were noticeable boos The AXIS theater inside The Axis theatre when she was announced as second-runner up while #MissJamaicaShouldHaveWon has been trending on twitter. See some of the comments – including some very funny ones - below.
