Light & Power explains latest power outage as work continues
The power outage today, Monday, August 12, 2019, was the result of ‘fuel injection equipment’ issues affecting Barbados Light & Power Company (BLPC) generating units at Spring Garden.
According to their restoration update around 6:30 pm this evening, the issues meant that the company was short on its generation capacity.
To manage the situation, BLPC effected two measures to balance electrical load and customer demand. Firstly, our interruptible customers were asked to operate off-grid for the period. Secondly, the ‘load-sharing’ approach for our residential customers commenced from as early as 7 am. and then rotated to other areas at 1:00 pm. to help stabilize the system.
The company apologized to customers for this disruption today.
While some of the equipment faults have been repaired and customers restored, BLPC has pledged continued work to avoid a repeat. Further work is in progress to complete the repairs, identify the root cause and prevent a recurrence according to the company's notice via social media.
BLPC also thanked its employees who worked earnestly to restore the power and minimize the impact.
