Lions earn first point in Premiership
Scotty’s Car Rentals St Andrew Lions earned their first point in top-flight football, when the Barbados Football Association (BFA) Premier League continued last Sunday evening at the BFA Wildey Turf.
After three consecutive defeats, the boys from the east coast earned a valuable point against Crane and Equipment Ellerton in an exciting 1-1 tie.
The game was a keenly contested encounter between the two bottom-placed teams of Zone 2; there was competition but very little quality displayed which made the game balance for the most part.
Ellerton’s captain and chief marksman Shakille Belle, was left frustrated specifically during the first half where he was starved of service but he came alive in the second half as he made a number of his trademark runs down the left and provided some teasing crosses for his teammates who failed to convert.
Shakir Skeete was the pillar in the Lion’s midfield, providing protection for his backline but most importantly distributing the ball at an efficient standard.
When a goalless event was seemingly on the cards, Belle produced a moment of magic.
Ellerton midfielder Shane Hermas found the national forward unmarked at the top of the penalty area and with one touch curled the ball into the top left-hand corner beyond stand-in goalkeeper Zico Greaves in the 83rd minute.
Derico King saved his team and probably the coach’s job in the 88th minute, when he received a precise pass into the penalty area from Skeete and fired his shot powerfully beyond goalkeeper Jamar Brewster.
The result did not change anything for either team as they remain fifth and sixth in the group.
