Man remanded after cash register, TV, drinks and more go missing
A homeless man accused of entering a bar and stealing the cash register, alcoholic drinks and electronics, was remanded to HMP Dodds yesterday.
He is 20-year-old Selwyn Richard Maurice Maynard, who was recorded as having no fixed address. Maynard, however, told the court yesterday that he was living with his mother for five months. A claim which had not been verified.
The unemployed man denied that he entered Niki’s Hide Out and Bar as a trespasser between January 31 and February 1 and stole a cash register, one television, seven bottles of brandy, six bottles of whiskey, seven bottles of vodka, 24 bottles of rum, nine cases of beer, four bottles of wine, six cases of soft drinks, 24 bottles of energy drinks, a bag and a HDMI cable all valued at $4,221 and belonging to Jared Layne.
He, however, admitted to possession of 3.4 grammes of marijuana on February 6. The drugs were found on him after he was arrested by police.
Station Sergeant Neville Reid, during his objections, raised concerns about Maynard's uncertain place of abode. He said if bail was granted there was no guarantee of his attendance at court. He also told the court that there was a need to protect society.
The magistrate remanded him until March 8.
