Prime Minister Mia Mottley has said small island states in the Caribbean are not looking for handouts from bigger powers.
Instead, the region wants a level, more equitable playing field to achieve sustainable development.
The PM's comments were made during an address at the 74th Annual General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) in New York City.
“We will not be mendicant. What we want - no- what we need is fiscal and policy space to achieve sustainable development to be number to adapt and to innovate in ways that allow us to be true and faithful to the task of bringing prosperity to our people,” Mottley said.
Mottley, in a wide-ranging nearly half-hour-long address, also spoke out on the situation in Venezuela which at one time appeared to be headed toward international conflict.
