Nature Mix is promoting kitchen gardening to families during COVID-19 outbreak.

Free seedlings are being given out to help Barbadians save money, reduce their food bills and stay safely at home.

You read that right!

But how?

As thousands of citizens have become unemployed or have been forced to work from home to stop the spread of COVID-19, local organic potting company, Nature Mix, is calling on Barbadians to reduce their supermarket bill through home gardening.

The Newton Plantation, Christ Church business launched Project Homegrown, an initiative that seeks to tackle food security. Persons who have been affected by the COVID-19 outbreak will receive free seedlings once they visit the company headquarters.

“To do our part in stimulating and encouraging home and backyard gardening in Barbados, so that our food security can never again be threatened by a situation like the one we are currently in with COVID-19, we are giving away free seedlings to anyone who visits the Nature Mix location on Newton Plantation Road.

We’re also encouraging those who collect seedlings and are using our Nature Mix potting mix, to post a before and after pic of what they’re growing with the hashtag #NatureMixHomeGrown. We’re trying to make growing cool again," said Nature Mix marketing manager Nicholas Hinkson.

Noting that the novel coronavirus pandemic has created an international slowdown, with borders closed countries have seen a hike in food prices and farmers have been forced to dispose of their produce. Hinkson stated Project Homegrown sought to encourage the ordinary Bajan to embrace home gardening and backyard farming, given the island's dependence on food importation with a bill of $4 billion US.

"Barbados is in a position where it is incalculable how long we may have to deal with factory production limitations and border issues as a result," the Nature Mix marketing manager added.

Individuals or plants nurseries interested in donated their seedlings or products to the Project Homegrown initiative can find further details on www.naturemix246.com or email naturemix246@gmail.com
