New VP at Variety Charity excited to start

She raised about $6 000 for the charity even before her appointment.

Toni Thorne is the new Vice Chief Barker (Vice President) of Variety the Children’s Charity in Barbados. She was named at the recent Annual General Meeting, April 22, at Divi Southwinds.

Speaking to Loop with the happy news, Thorne is ready to work to increase fundraising, volunteerism and humanitarianism.

She said:

“My role includes being Chairperson of the Fundraising Committee. In executing that role, I would like to get more youth involved in volunteerism and charity work and strengthen the relationship the charity has with corporate Barbados. My aim is to work with key stakeholders to increase the awareness of the projects and activities of Variety.”

Smiling still, having returned to island this week, she added, “I am truly humbled to be given the opportunity to enhance and empower the already large number of lives that Variety touches. I hope that I can continue the legacy of the existing team and those who have gone before me such as Dame Olga.

“To whom much is given, much is expected and it is my mission to exceed the expectations of those who have instilled the trust in me to take on this new task and chapter in my life. In short, I'm hella excited and looking forward to making a difference!”

Thorne’s appointment is for two years.

Executive Director, Donnah Russell said that her appointment is “a direct result of her philanthropy and her interests in Variety and the children we serve. Even before her appointment Toni was involved in the charity and was single-handedly responsible for fundraising efforts to the tune of about $6000.

“In her new post she is Chairperson of the fundraising committee and we expect she will bring a fresh perspective to this area of the charity.”

In terms of the new Board and its plans, Russell added, “The Executive will immediately look at new ways of doing business to capture the resources - human, social and financial, we need to bring relevant programming to our clients.”
