NSC and Mavericks SC share top spot in BFA Women’s Premier League
The National Sports Council (NSC) and Mavericks SC share top spot in the Barbados Football Association’s (BFA) Women’s Premier League.
After two rounds of matches, both teams have attained six points with two victories; with their latest coming last night at the BFA Astroturf.
The NSC ladies needed a last-minute strike by Tianna Hackett to defeat nemesis the University of the West Indies (UWI) 1-0.
With a draw looking imminent, NSC was given a free kick just outside of the penalty area and Hackett displayed her quality to curl the ball into the back of the net, delivering a powerful blow to the Blackbirds who dominated most of the match.
Mavericks also won by a one-goal margin, fighting off a courageous challenge from Kick Start Genesis to win 2-1.
Following a goalless first half, Mavericks took the lead four minutes after the break courtesy of a goal from forward Felicia Jarvis.
Aaliyah Boyce doubled Mavericks’ lead in the 61st minute, but Christaline Chandler set up a nervous ending when she drew one back for Genesis in the 63rd minute.
Mavericks held their nerves and displayed maturity to hold on to the one-goal advantage and secure their second successive win.
ESFC Unity Stars registered their first win of the season when they defeated Technique FC 3-0. Goals by Marissa King in the 15th minute, Makala Alleyne in the 49th minute and Nashandi Clarke in the91st minute capped off an impressive evening for the Stars.
Third Round action kicks off Thursday evening at the BFA Astroturf when Mavericks take on UWI at 7 p.m. and NSC faces Unity Stars in the feature game at 9 p.m.
