It was a close call on Thursday for dozens of toddlers at the John Beckles Day Nursery after an afternoon fire just outside of the school.
Around 12:00 p.m the grass fire started on the premises of the Barbados Table Tennis Centre, along Nursery Drive near Constitution Road causing workers from the nursery to spring into action with buckets of water to out the fire. However, to aid in their cause were three officers from the Bridgetown Fire Station on Probyn Street and one fire tender.
The time of the call according to the Fire Service was 1:14 pm and the officers were under the command of Leading Fire Officer Franklin. As to the extent of damage, the Service said it was just a grass fire, no injuries or property damage.
A worker from the day nursery, who did not want to be identified, told Loop News that they were lucky that the fire did not spread to the area where the toddlers play. She said that she believed it may have been started by a smoking cigarette butt thrown from a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) passing nearby as it moved commuters to or from the neighbouring River Van Stand.
