St Lucy's residents, Bajans from the other 10 parishes and Barbadians who came home to kick off the We Gatherin' festivities did not disappoint the Parish Organising Committee for that most Northern constituency.
Chairperson of the Parish Organising Committee for St Lucy, Danny Babb has lauded the support received from both persons who live in and outside the parish as their month of We Gatherin activities draws to a close.
In an exclusive interview with Loop, Babb expressed his satisfaction saying:
“I am actually delighted with the support we have been given from the various communities as well and the various business people from within St Lucy. They have been very supportive of our ventures and they have really been doing their best in ensuring that all of our events come off with success. It has been very, very good. We have had the support of our people.”
Babb boasted of having an incident-free month of activities even though some events attracted hundreds of patrons. He stated that the first We Gatherin' event at River Bay had over 4,500 persons and estimated that over 5,000 persons took in the drag racing event in Bourbon last Sunday. He told Loop that the minimum numbers attending the local events ranged between 200 to 300 persons.
Questioned about what would happen after January ended, Babb shared that St Lucy would continue to roll-out events, as the year progresses.
“When January concludes we will be doing more events throughout the year because we cannot place people on a high and then leave them. I have to then constantly ensure that we have events throughout the We Gatherin’ year.”
One such event that he disclosed was ‘Dance Lucy Dance’ which is scheduled for February 29, 2019. He promised ‘Pickle Saturdays’ will remain a staple through the year of We Gatherin’ festivities and in addition, events will be hosted right through the year.
Speaking at ‘Lucy Pon Stage’ last Saturday evening, the St Lucy parliamentary representative, Peter Phillips thanked those who lent support and commended the efforts of all who contributed to the parish’s month-long celebrations. “The bar has been set high. The standards for the We Gatherin’ project have been set very high by St Lucy. After all, if you are at the top you can only start high,” Phillips said.
St. Lucy We Gatherin' Activities
Over the past weekend, the final weekend of January alone the parish hosted a plethora of events. Saturday’s activities commenced with a health walk, a market and genealogy day and concluded with a talent show. On Sunday, scores flocked to Bourbon, St Lucy for the drag racing event and the evening concluded with a gospel concert. The parish’s We Gatherin’ activities will come to an official close on January 31, after which St Peter will take up the We Gatherin’ mantle. (KMT)
