Man shot during police confrontation in St Joseph
The Royal Barbados Police Force (RBPF) is investigating the circumstances surrounding an officer-involved shooting.
Information from the Public Relations Office of the RBPF stated the shooting incident occurred last Thursday, February 20 around 9.41 am in Bowling Alley, St Joseph. The suspect, 25-year-old Renaldo Hope of Joe's River in the same parish, was shot by police in his right hand and right leg.
On that morning, police from the Tactical Response Unit were on mobile patrol duty in the area of Bowling Alley heading in the direction of Horse Hill when they encountered a man running. He was being chased by another man, later identified as Hope, who was armed with a silver-coloured revolver.
Police exited the vehicle, identified themselves as armed officers and instructed Hope to drop the firearm. Hope pointed the gun in the direction of the officers and the officer, fearing for his life, discharged his gun, injuring Hope.
An ambulance was summoned and Hope was transported to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for medical attention.
