Azzedine Alaïa has passed away.

According to WWD, born in Tunisia in 1939 to wheat-farming parents, Alaïa’s love of fashion was inspired by his twin sister and family friends. A French friend of his mother gave him copies of Vogue from an early age and suggested he study sculpture at the Beaux-Arts in Tunis, which he did.

On Instagram, Barbados' Rihanna posted:

"my dear ALAIA.... you will live on forever. rip."

The caption is accompanied by a photo of Alaïa kissing Rihanna on her forehead on an occasion when they had dinner.

According to Vogue.com, he died in Paris, France. "The Sphinx-like designer, once dubbed 'the King of Cling', was highly revered for his garments that moulded the body into extraordinary proportions, the product of an obsessive craftsman who bears more resemblance to a sculptor than a fashion designer."

Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enninful this morning said:

"Azzedine Alaïa was a true visionary, and a remarkable man. He will be deeply missed by all of those who knew and loved him, as well as by the women around the world who wore his clothes... The generosity of his spirit and genius of his designs will never be forgotten."
