Road cordoned off by police as firemen battle blaze



Traffic was being diverted at the top of Bishop's Court Hill and Britton's X Road this morning as clouds of smoke blackened the sky in the area.

Police reported that about 6:20 am today, Tuesday, May 29, 2018, members of the Royal Barbados Police Force responded to the scene of a fire at an abandoned building owned by ANSA MCAL Group of Companies located at Upper Collymore Rock St. Michael.

The Barbados Fire Service responded to the call at 6:23 am. Under the command of Leading Fire Officer Bynoe, the fire officials were able to contain and extinguish the blaze.

Police told the media in a release that the building is an old unoccupied property without electricity and has been abandoned for more than a decade.

The fire was contained to the upper floor and was brought under control, then subsequently extinguished about 7:30 am. The lower floor was not damaged; there was no damage to any other property.

Two water tenders and one water tanker from the Bridgetown Fire Station with eleven (11) personnel from the Fire Service responded to the building fire. Police investigations are continuing.
