The Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI) is gearing up to end its ‘Year of Sport’ with the popular Run Barbados Marathon Weekend in partnership with the Cave Shepherd Group.

CEO of the BTMI, William Griffith, indicated at a recent press launch that the focus on sports has been a good strategy for the tourism agency, which saw the addition of new events to the local calendar, namely Barbados Beach and Wellness Festival, Barbados Cycling Festival and Barbados Surf Pro.

“All of these events have displayed the growth potential for ‘destination Barbados’, particularly in the area of sports tourism,” said Griffith.

The Run Barbados Marathon weekend has grown in the past three years with 1500 participants in 2014 to 2500 in 2016, with overseas visitor participation up 31 percent in 2016 compared to 2015.

He added, “In many ways Run Barbados encapsulates the found pillars of the Year of Sports by using sporting activities to craftily immerse visitors in the unique Barbadian culture.”

The Marathon Weekend has the Cave Shepherd Group as its title sponsor and boast the following events: Signia Fun Mile; Ganzee 5K Walk for Charity; Cave Shepherd Visa Card 5K; Colombian Emeralds International 10K; Fortress Half-Marathon; and the Cave Shepherd Marathon.

The charity walk will this year benefit the Barbados Heart & Stroke Foundation.

Event Director, Zary Evelyn, emphasised that Barbados has thankfully not been heavily impacted this hurricane season and is ready to welcome overseas entrants to the event.
