Safety concerns force cancellation of Turks and Caicos Conch Festival
The 2019 edition of the popular Turks and Caicos (TCI) Conch Festival has been cancelled.
A release from Algernon Dean, TCI Conch Festival Committee said they are not planning to stage the 17th Annual TCI Conch Festival as per usual in November 2019.
The committee said the decision was made due to safety and logistical concerns with the usual venue and difficulty securing a new location for the event.
"The decision was not made lightly. For 16 years the TCI Conch Festival was celebrated as a premium annual food and cultural event cherished by both residents of the TCI and tourists. Each year, thousands of people attend and participate in the event and this year’s festival was eagerly anticipated. However, due to safety and logistical concerns with the normal Blue Hills venue the planning Committee attempted to secure without success an alternative location to host this year’s event," the statement said.
"While we regret the need to postpone this year’s Festival, the Committee is of the view that the postponement is a just and responsible course of action in the light of the growing safety concerns and the need to find a solution for the sustainable hosting of a Festival which persons of all ages can enjoy and take pride in."
