Setback for BDFSP in Digicel Premier League
The Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme (BDFSP) title challenge suffered a major setback on Thursday night at the Barbados Football Association (BFA) Wildey Astroturf.
The 2015 champions gave up a two-goal lead to draw with current title holders the University of the West Indies (UWI) 3-3.
A victory would have sent BDFSP back to the top of the table, level with Neighbourhood Care Pharmacy Weymouth Wales on 29 points; however they were forced to settle for a point, which places them two points adrift of the leaders, having played a game more.
Corey Barrow sent the Blackbirds ahead in the 23rd minute but Akeem Hill cancelled that goal when he equalised for BDFSP six minutes later.
Four minutes before the break, Hill scored his and BDFSP’s second with a well-timed header from a Rashad Jules taken corner from the right.
Immediately after the break, BDFSP stretched their lead to 3-1 thanks to a sublime goal by Shaquille Boyce.
Boyce cut in from the left, danced around his marker and curled the ball into the top left-hand corner with his right foot, giving goalkeeper Bentley Springer no chance.
BDFSP’s wheels started to fall off when centre Back Shane Codrington was sent off by referee Jamar Springer for a reckless challenge inside the area on UWI’s Dario Harewood in the 81st minute.
Harewood took the resulting spot kick, sending BDFSP’s goalkeeper Dario Weir to his left as the ball went into the bottom right-hand corner.
As soon as BDFSP resumed play from the kickoff, UWI quickly dispossessed them and created a goal scoring opportunity of their own which Harewood gracefully accepted; turning and volleying his shot into the bottom right corner from 12 yards out.
