A hat-trick by senior national player Shanice Stevenson highlighted the opening night of the 2018 Barbados Football Association (BFA) 2018 Women’s Premier League, last Saturday at the BFA Wildey Turf.

Stevenson’s three goals were instrumental as they allowed her new club Kick Start Genesis to defeat defending champions the University of the West Indies (UWI) 3-2.

The UWI Blackbirds showed comfort and confidence early on and looked as though they would blow away their opponents, scoring twice within the opening 15 minutes.

Roxanne Bradshaw handed UWI the lead in the 6th minute, completing a well-executed build-up play from the right-hand side.

A patient build-up by the Blackbirds saw former US-based player Soraya Toppin-Herbert go by her marker and played a delightful cross along the surface for Bradshaw to blast home from close range.

Toppin-Herbert was again apart of UWI’s goal-scoring make-up; her left-sided corner was headed powerfully into the left corner by defender Shonelle Als in the 14th minute.

Als went quickly from hero to villain as she brought down fleet-footed winger Tiana Bynoe inside the penalty area.

Stevenson stepped up to take the spot-kick and finished confidently, placing her shot firmly into the bottom left-hand corner in the 21st minute.

Six minutes later Stevenson was on the scoresheet again, as she locked the score at 2-2.

A pass from Bynoe found Stevenson at the top of the box who lobbed goalkeeper Connie John from 25 yards.

Stevenson saved the best for last in the 41st minute; blasting a 35 yard free-kick high into the right corner and beyond the flapping arms of John.
