Shannon Harris ready to put Barbados on the Miss Universe map

Miss Universe Barbados heads off to The Philippines this week to compete for the title of Miss Universe 2016.

Shannon Harris, a 22-year-old from Christ Church, Barbados, says she is ready to show the world that “Barbados is coming back very, very strong” after a nine-year hiatus from the prestigious beauty pageant.

She told Loop: “I want them to know that Barbados does have strong contenders… This can be our crown!”

The Bajan beauty said she is feeling confident as she gets ready to leave the island on Wednesday and is taking everything in stride: “No pressure at all. I’m just taking the time to focus on myself. You can’t focus on negativity. I take the compliments, the support, but the negative? I don’t really focus on it."

This year’s pageant is being held in Manila, the capital of The Philippines – the home country of the reigning Miss Universe, Pia Wurtzbach. Harris will be joining over 80 other contestants from around the world on January 13 as they begin their final steps towards Coronation Night on January 30 (January 29 at 8 p.m. local time). The show will again be hosted by US comedian and talk show host Steve Harvey, along with model Ashley Graham, and will air live on Fox.

Shannon will be looking to impress in her National Costume, designed by Xhosa Barbados, and her evening gown by US celebrity designer, Michael Costello of Project Runway renown.

Before the big show, she will be on a tight schedule of rehearsals, press activities, photo shoots and other preparations, which will give her and Barbados many opportunities for international exposure.

Loop put Shannon to the test with our ‘Iz A Bajan’ pop quiz and we have no doubt she’ll be repping the 246 to the max!
