Shots fired near Nursery school as police corner two armed men
Two men are in police custody after trying unsuccessfully to flee a scene in St Michael.
In a press release issued this evening, Police Public Relations Officer, Acting Inspector Rodney Inniss told the media that around 10.30 am this morning, Friday, February 7, 2020, personnel from the Major Crime/SCATS, Canine and Bridgetown Division conducted a search in the area of Turtons Gap, Gitten's Road, Government Hill, Ivy, St Michael.
The officers were conducting the search warrant as a result of an active investigation which involved a suspect already in police custody.
Inniss said that on arrival to the Ivy area, police met two men who both attempted to flee the scene. One man had a gun in his hand and in his effort to evade one group of officers he ran in the direction of another group of officers still with the weapon in his hand. He was instructed by police to drop the weapon but he did not comply.
Inniss said that the police then had reason to discharge their firearms and the man then threw the gun he was holding into the yard of a home. That firearm and ammunition were retrieved by police and that man was taken into custody.
The second man was running away but fell to the ground in his bid to escape as well. He was captured and when searched a loaded firearm was retrieved from his person by the officers. He too was taken into custody.
Inniss explained this incident occurred near the St. Giles Nursery and Primary Schools and as a result of the Police investigations the general area had to be temporarily cordoned for scene management, which caused some disruption to regular traffic flow, however parents and guardians were allowed to go to residences and to the school to facilitate their business.
Inniss repeated that "No one received gun shot wounds."
As it relates to any injuries during the incident, he added, "The man who fell sustained minor abrasions. He was taken for medical attention, was treated and discharged and both men are in police custody assisting with further investigations."
Another man was arrested from in that vicinity yesterday.
