Shuri – One! Rest of Black Panther cast – Two!

If you watched Marvel’s Black Panther and did not walk away thinking Shuri made that movie, then you may need to watch again.
I’ll bet my last dollar that movie could not stand to lose Shuri. Yes her brother King T’Challa is important, but Shuri is genius – her acting and her scientific brilliance.
When a young black girl with microbraids and sass is the smartest person on the planet and she is given the tools, resources, incubator and freedom to explore, experiment and charter the course of the future, you can’t help but sing ‘Wakanda Forever’.
Shuri is played by 24-year-old Guyanese-born Letitia Wright.
Today, many societies, especially in the Caribbean talk about how the youth are the future and they grapple with rising amounts of youth unemployment and youth crime, but then the opportunities for the youth are so limited and narrow, it’s like two sets of train tracks running side by side that they will never touch.
However, in the Black Panther, the future was literally in the hands of the youth and Shuri knew exactly what to do with it, and when.
From the moment she asked – ‘Did he freeze?’ Shuri was the annoying little sister that challenges authority, even a King, brother or not.
5 Top one-liners by Shuri:
1. “Don’t scare me like that, colonizer!”
Well if this did not hit you like a full bus and knock the wind out your sails causing you to burst out laughing, yet nod, you need to watch the movie again. Try getting out of your feelings the second time around.
2. “Just because something works doesn’t mean it can’t be improved.”
In a world, where many people still have an ‘If it ain’t broke why fix it’ mentality, it was refreshing to hear Shuri point out that because something is good does not mean it can’t be bettered.
3. “Great! Another broken white boy for us to fix!”
With many stories floating around of victims with Swastika tattoos requesting only white doctors to handle their surgeries, here comes “the colonizer” under African Shuri’s vibranium knife.
4. “This corset is really uncomfortable so can we all wrap this up and go home?”
The mood is tense; the crowning ceremony has gone a little off track. Only Shuri could break the ice like this. She actually raises her hand to challenge her brother – HA!
5. “I’m recording for research purposes.”
She may have been playing a prank on her brother, King T’Challa, but it was a double-edge response in that millennials are actually becoming the documenters of this world’s happenings, as annoying as older folks find it. Cue King T’Challa “Delete that footage!”
What was your favourite Shuri line? Were you here for the sneakers?
