Six months in prison for roti thief
Fifty-nine year old Adwin Alonza Cumberbatch was slapped with a six month prison sentence on Wednesday.
Earlier this month Cumberbatch, of My Lord's Hill, St Michael pleaded guilty to stealing and eating two rotis and two slices of cake from a Rubis Gas Station on June 27. However, he denied an additional charge of possession of an apparatus 'fit for the misuse of cocaine'.
On that occasion he was remanded to the Psychiatric Hospital for assessment. On his return to the District "A" Magistrates' Court, the psychiatric report said he suffered from a cocaine addiction problem but was fit to plead.
As a result, Cumberbatch admitted to the cocaine related charge. The apparatus was found on him after police held him for the stolen gas station items.
The report indicated that Cumberbatch declined drug rehabilitation and when questioned by the court he said he preferred the walk in programme at the Black Rock institution.
He apologised to the court and asked for leniency but Magistrate Douglas Frederick shed light on his history before the court.
Cumberbatch is known for drug and theft offences and when released from a stint in prison in 2007 returned to stealing.
"You are on a path of destruction with this drug thing," the magistrate said.
