Soca Monarchs crowned as regional Carnivals heat up

Lil Rick is having a bumper Crop Over. The singer, known as Hypa Dawg, has won the Sweet Soca Monarch title in Barbados, bringing the total of his 2018 titles to two.

Rick won the first International Bashment Soca Monarch with his popular song 'Ben It', before taking the Sweet Soca title at Soca Royale on Sunday with 'Breakfast In Bed'.

Michael Mercer, known as Mikey, took the Party Monarch title with his song ‘My Kinda Party’.

Crop Over will culminate with Kadooment on August 6.

The Barbados soca competitions are just the latest in a string of competitions that have been taking place in the Caribbean over the ‘Summer of Carnivals’.

In St Lucia, which recently concluded its Carnival celebrations, Teddyson John and Ricky T took the Soca Monarch title with Sha Leh Sho.

In St Vincent, Fireman Hooper took the Power Soca Monarch title with ‘Amen’ while Fimba won the Ragga Soca title with the popular ‘Funky Business’.
