Spartans FC win first BFA Beach Football Tournament
In an epic battle of skill, determination and resilience, Spartans FC became the inaugural winners of the Barbados Football Association (BFA) Beach Football Tournament on Friday night at Brandon's Beach.
Led by national beach soccer player and the tournament's MVP Jamar Grazette, Spartans emerged 5-4 victors in a penalty shootout after a 4-4 score line at the end of regular time.
Both Spartans and Tsunami overcame early first-leg deficits in their two-game semifinal matches to reach the final.
In the first semifinal, Spartans blew a three-goal lead as they went down 5-4 against the Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme (BDFSP). Spartans returned in the leg with a fluent brand of attacking football to defeat the soldiers 6-4, advancing to the final with a 10-9 aggregate.
Tsunami also suffered defeat in their first semifinal match; losing to tournament favourites Sao Paulo 3-2. But in the second leg, Jamar Farquad and Akeem Bourne propelled Tsunami to victory, 8-4.
In the final, Spartans raced to a two-goal lead when Grazettes scored in the 1st and 10th minutes. Bourne cut the scoreline in half when he scored for Tsunami in the 12th minute and Bradford levelled the scores a minute later. Odle restored the lead for the Spartans in the 15th minute but Cleon Culley deflected the ball into his own net in the 20th minute to make the score 3-3. Bradford scored his second and Tsunami's fourth in the 24th minute to give his team the lead for the first time of the match. But Odle snatched defeat from Tsunami when his goal on the stroke of full-time tied the scores and sent the game into a penalty shootout.
Bourne's sudden death miss and Odle's composed finished sparked a massive celebration amongst the Spartan players and supporters.
