Spotted with a mattress on his head, Theft-accused pleads guilty
A drug addict, who has stolen spice, fishcakes and just recently- a mattress, to support his drug habit, promised to make the best of his time at rehab.
Anderson Sylvester Als, 39, of no fixed address appeared in the District "A" Magistrates' Court today where he pleaded guilty to stealing the $100 mattress which belonged to the James Street Methodist Church.
The offence occurred on November 22.
Police caught Als walking through Tudor Street with the mattress on his head. When questioned he showed the officers where he took the stolen item from.
Counsel Mohia Ma'at told the court that his client did indeed have a drug problem but wanted help fighting it.
“It is a case of David and Goliath and he is facing a giant that he can’t fight on his own,” Ma'at said.
The lawyer told the court that Als’ habit started from 2006 and it had been a downward spiral since. From spice to fishcakes, Als stole to support his habit; the lawyer explained. However, he said Als was now seeking help.
The magistrate explained that Als had to take the decision seriously.
Als will return to court on December 14 after an evaluation at the Psychiatric Hospital.
