Teacher in Jamaica makes bail on charge of raping student

A 36-year-old male teacher at a prominent high school in Westmoreland in Jamaica, who was last week arrested and charged for allegedly raping a 16-year-old female student of the institution, was granted bail in the sum of $500,000 with surety when he appeared in the Westmoreland Parish Court on Tuesday, June 25, 2019.

The accused, Jerome Heron, is booked to return to court on July 24.

He was ordered to surrender his travel documents and to report to the Savanna-la-Mar Police Station on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays as conditions of his bail.

He was also ordered to stay away from working where there are girls of age 16 years and below.

According to police reports, the offence was allegedly committed at the school on Friday, February 1, 2019.

The Westmoreland police said further investigations are being conducted into other sexual-related offences that have reportedly been committed against other female students at the same educational institution.
