History was made on Saturday, March 24, as Martinique crowned its first women’s Pro Surf Champion and that champion happened to be the Caribbean’s sole representative in the draw, Barbados’ top international female surfer - Chelsea Tuach.
Tuach was a stand-out all week with her powerful, fluid surfing on the right-hand point break of Basse Pointe. She defeated three Australian surfers on route to her final win - Holly Wawn, in the quarters, Philippa Anderson in the semis, and former Championship Tour surfer, Claire Bevilacqua in the final.
This win has catapulted Tuach to the top of the North American QS rankings and to 16th in the world.
On Facebook Tuach wrote:
"GOODNESS! This week has been incredible! I have felt all of the Caribbean love and I have been competing on such a high. This feeling is the best! I have you all to thank, thank you for the messages and the love! This means the world.
"I’ve had a few hard knocks for the year already, but to put an event together here and get the win is so special! I love you Martinique!"
