UWI Blackbirds vs Ellerton

It took them a while, but the University of the West Indies (UWI) registered their first victory of the 2018 Barbados Football Association (BFA) Premier League season.

After four games, which saw results of three draws and one defeat, the Blackbirds edged Crane & Equipment Ellerton FC 1-0 to climb up the Zone 2 table and move into third position on six points.

In a match which created very few goalscoring opportunities, UWI managed to score in the 58thminute through a penalty kick from Mustafa Haqq.

Haqq converted his spot-kick; blasting his right-footed effort to the left of goalkeeper Kerry Holder.

Referee Gillian Martindale awarded UWI an earlier penalty after an Ellerton player handled the ball inside the penalty area.

However, for the second consecutive game, UWI missed their penalty kick; Alvin Chapman fired his left-footed shot wide of the left upright.

Ellerton had an opportunity to tie the score on the brink of full time but Shaquan Clarke’s header from close range lacked the power and direction to beat UWI’s goalkeeper Bentley Springer.
