VIDEO: Public urged to adopt a bed for homeless
Barbadians are being encouraged to join the Adopt-A-Bed campaign launched by the Barbados Alliance to End Homelessness (BAEH).
The organization, formerly the Barbados Vagrants and Homeless Society (BVHS), recently opened its new doors at Spry Street, The City, inclusive of a shelter which can house up to 90 persons a night.
President of the BAEH, Kemar Saffrey told the media at a briefing today that the group needs to raise at least $800,000 to cover operational costs, developmental programs and to get the shelter up and running.
“We need the continuous support of Barbadians to get this program up to full force. While many persons may want to donate to the organization with food and clothing, the organization will need financial donations.
"We are asking every Barbadian to give a contribution of $20 to go towards a bed… we believe every Barbadian can take part. That [donation] would go towards each person being able to receive counselling, breakfast on mornings, a bed for the night, cleaning of linens and taking care of the dorms.”
Saffrey said with the number of homeless persons increasing constantly, he implored the public to come on board with the campaign so the BAEH can work towards reintegrating these persons into society.
“The Barbados Alliance does not charge any of our clients for any services. All services are free. In return we need support. We want to be able to reach everybody, we don’t want to turn away anyone.”
