The St James Settlers had the big boys but they were out gunned at the 3WS Oval on Saturday night when they faced UWI Blackbirds in the Final of the UWI/BCA Inter-parish Competition.

The Blackbirds began their quest for victory when they won the toss and elected to bat first. St James struck in the third over removing Leniko Boucher for a mere seven runs. However, this just caused the Blackbirds to step on the gas. The second wicket put on 100 runs with Jonathan Carter top scoring with 59 runs and his partner Nicholas Kirton scoring 37. By the time the Settlers had responded the Blackbirds were on their way to what turned out to be a winning total of 142 for 4.

The St James Settlers never got their innings off the ground. Every time you thought, this was it…another man departed the crease. It was painful to watch as some of the biggest names in Barbadian cricket surrendered their wicket without a fight.

Mother Nature tried to assist as the rain came down for about 20 minutes but by then the Settlers were already staring down the barrel of the Blackbirds' loaded gun. The D/L method came into play and allowed Akeal Hosein some freedom as he scored 23 from 16 balls.

Raymond Bynoe was the leading wicket taker for the Blackbirds as he bagged four wickets for 21 of the 88 runs.

The Settlers, however, made sure that the Blackbirds did not rub salt in their wounds as they batted out the revised allotted overs and finished their innings at 88 for 9.

The UWI Blackbirds made room in their nest on December 30, 2017, for the UWI/BCA Inter-parish Championship Trophy.
